are tooth-colored filling surrounded by tooth structure
while onlays are larger fillings meant to replace both

Porcelain inlays and onlays are stronger than composite
bonded fillings since they reinforce your tooth from
every angle. Compared to crowns, inlays and onlays
only require the removal of old filling, decay and
little tooth structure, thus conserving more of your
tooth.
